LIBERALS ARE WORKING WHILE HARPER SHUTS DOWN PARLIAMENT

For Immediate Release:
January 29, 2010

OTTAWA – Mississauga - Streetsville Member of Parliament, Bonnie Crombie said that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s undemocratic decision to shut down Parliament until March didn’t stop Liberal MPs from returning to work on Parliament Hill this week to focus on the issues that matter to their constituents.

“The nation’s business doesn’t stop just because Mr. Harper decides to lock MPs out of Parliament,” said Crombie. “We’re doing the job we were elected to do – making sure the voices of the constituents of Mississauga - Streetsville are heard on Parliament Hill.”

Liberal MPs returned to Ottawa on January 25th – the day the House of Commons was originally set to resume – to host a series of policy panels and roundtable discussions with notable Canadians who have a wide range of expertise.

“The Conservative government doesn’t have a long-term strategy for the success of our country and its citizens,” said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. “That’s why we’re consulting with Canadians not only here in Ottawa, but from all across the country, to take stock of where Canada is, and where Canada needs to go.”

The Liberal-organized forums focused on job creation; Conservative interference in independent agencies overseeing the RCMP, military and nuclear safety; economic security for women; challenges facing Canada’s veterans; Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases; and health goals for Canada in 2017.

Also this week, Mr. Ignatieff laid out the Liberal plan to prevent future Prime Ministers from abusing the power to shut down Parliament. The Liberal Party will seek changes that would formally codify the prorogation conventions that were respected until Stephen Harper became Prime Minister, while adding the requirement that Parliamentary Committees continue to function during prorogation.

On jobs, Mr. Ignatieff proposed initiatives to immediately create jobs and strengthen Canada’s economic future. The proposals focus on support for manufacturers, jobs for young Canadians and encouraging investment in start-up companies.

Next week, Liberals will stay hard at work, with forums to hear from the public on poverty and homelessness, international aid, Afghanistan, crime, the environment, and issues facing rural Canada.

“Stephen Harper is making short-term decisions for partisan gain, but Liberals aren’t going to play this game,” concluded Crombie. “We are going to keep doing the job Canadians elected us to do, the job Canadians expect us to do.”
